What do you GET TO do today?
Most of us have never lived through something like this. Many are stressed and scared right now and we all have many of the same questions: How will we get through this? What will life be like after this is over? When will this end?
In uncertain times it's easy to give in to fear and panic or bury our heads in the sand and pretend the world around us isn't changing. While it can be difficult not to give in to such feelings this pandemic is also giving many of us an opportunity.
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"
- Mister Rogers
People are stepping up to help their at-risk neighbours. Businesses are adjusting how things are done, from extra cleaning to only allowing a certain number of people through the door. Truckers are running long hours to keep shelves stocked, retail employees who were never treated or thought of themselves as essential workers are continuing to go to work to benefit the rest of us. Medical staff work tirelessly to help those who are already infected, some going home after to their own families where they can't even greet their children after a long day for fear of infecting them. From the smallest acts of kindness to the largest acts of bravery, there are helpers everywhere you look.
This isn't the first pandemic that the human race has faced. We've been here before, we'll be here again. So what can you do? Be kind and be grateful to those who are risking themselves to keep your life as normal as possible and don't waste the time that you're being given. Reflect and breathe.
Reframe your day, when you wake, what do you get to do? Stop thinking in have to's. Even if you start as simple as "I get to wake up today." I credit Mel Robbins for this idea and in these uncertain times, I am doing my best to follow it.
